The carob tree is a medium-sized, 5 to 7 meters. Its fruit, called carob pod or bajoca forms a sheath or between 10 and 20 cm long, once mature reaches a dark brown, almost black. Normally mature between late August and early September. The seeds are oval flattened, brown and there are 15 to 20 per carob. The pulp that is sweet and covered in some cases consumed as human food in poor countries (war and postwar Spanish it was a chocolate substitute of poor quality). In the Balearics it was in times of famine. Normally used as cattle feed either directly buried grazing (sheep pigs ò) or chopped and separated from the bone (horses). Tree is near the coast as temperatures below 5 degrees below zero you die.
